The most important task of a bishop continues to be the formation of holy, healthy, and happy priests to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ in his diocese for generations to come. The realization of this grave but awesome responsibility is important now more than ever.
Please prayerfully consider joining the Shepherd’s Legacy, a society that solely funds the formation and education of seminarians for the Archdiocese of Portland. On average the Archdiocese of Portland has between 25–30 men in formation for the priesthood. These are good, faithful men who are striving for holiness and desire to lay down their lives for you, the Church.
It is our duty as members of the one Body of Christ to ensure that our seminarians receive the best formation and education available. Each year, the Archdiocese of Portland spends up to $2 million for the education and formation of our seminarians. The average seminarian is in formation for 6 years, or $330,000 ($55,000 per year). This investment ensures that our seminarians will be prepared for priestly service in our local parishes and schools.
This year, we are inviting all the faithful in western Oregon to be a part of the Shepherd’s Legacy. Please consider joining us in leaving a legacy of happy, holy, and healthy priests here in the Archdiocese of Portland for generations to come.
Respectfully yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Alexander K. Sample Archbishop of Portland in Oregon |
